Server Problems and Other Technical Issues

I'm late posting today as this site was having server problems this morning, and I was having user problems late this morning. Some things can be corrected.

Database Design 101
I don't pretend to be the most knowledgeable tekkie around, but I can pretty much identify poor database design when I see it. The person/persons who designed this system I'm supporting now was brilliant in concepts, but horrible in design. My company has customers we deliver to, but we have 2 customer files. One file, called Customer is really the billing customer while the other file, called CustShip is the Delivery address. Each has an 8 byte CHARACTER field for the index, but the users were told to only use 6 of those characters. ? NEVER use a Character field for an index. And why is this field called Customer number?

Georgia, one step away from Alabama
Some bills before the Ga Legislature are mind-numbing. There is the 'Shoot First, Ask Questions Later' bill that allows gunners to shoot someone they think is threatening them, then find out if they really were. Won't make much difference, I think people are already doing that, I guess now they won't be charged with murder.

Another bill will allow pharmacists to not dispense any medication they are morally against. Basically this means they can choose to dispense birth-control or Plan B pills (morning after pills) at their descretion. A pharmacist has NO RIGHT to decide what is best for me. What if a pharmacist has determined that depression is not a medical problem, that taking anti-depressents isn't morally right? What if the pharmacist decides that those Little Blue Pills(viagra) are morally unacceptable on the grounds it encourages people to have sex? I'll bet those legislators change that bill real fast!

And then there's the 'Woman's Right To Know' bill that allows women seeking an abortion to view a sonogram of her 'baby'. From a very cold stance, these women don't want the 'baby', so why would they want to view it?? Any who's paying for this? Do clinics deny women who want their babies sonograms because they can't afford it? And now they are offering sonograms to women who don't want it, weather they can afford it or not. So an unwanted baby may born for society to take care of and a wanted baby may be born unhealthy for society to take care of. Wow, that sounds like a lose-lose situation to me.

More Radical Stuff
I'm on a roll, so let's keep going. Let's legalize drugs. Just tax the hell out of them and we can pay for those unwanted babies. There will be less violence in some neighborhoods because the competition won't be there. How can JoeDrugDealer compete with CVS in pricing/distribution and advertising?

And let's pass out school vouchers, but give me one too, as I don't have any kids. I need the tax break. (Sarcasm doesn't come across very well when you're typing.) Taking money out of the public school system won't fix it. First we must protect the school system from being sued, then reinstate rules and appropriate punishment for breaking those rules and allow the teachers to teach. If a kid can't do the work, flunk them. If a kid is unruly in class, give him detention. Raise the bar just a bit, and expect children to suceed. Get rid of cellphones in class, develop a dress and conduct code and punish those who don't follow the rules.

Frustration
I have lost 5lbs since Thanksgiving. Ok, I know, I've lost and not gained, but I should be doing so much better. I have to quit buying the goodies to snack on, I have to realize that a dieting week is 7 days and weekends count. And if I do exercise, I have to do it more than once a week. So when I'm done with the Vodka and Kaluha that I have now, I WON'T get any more. I did get some Espresson Vodka, which is excellent. You can mix it with the Nestle Cookies and Cream milkshake you get a the grocery store. Yea, that's on my diet!

More to come...
As things happen, I'll be posting. Thanks for taking the time to read. You're opinions are welcome but if you have to start calling me names, don't bother, I won't read them. As my Dad says 'Opinions are like a**holes, everyone has one.'
