TGIF

Seems I couldn't even spell last night. Oh well.

OverSeas
Someone commented that I might consider looking overseas for employment. I've considered it, but I'm not bilingual, so that would limit the countries I could work in, and my skill set isn't exactly State of the Art. But then there are the political issues. England and the UK would be my one of my first choices, but they have extremely high taxes and it's cold. I know I'd get over that, and living in England or Scotland would be a hoot, but they have real terrorists that live there. When I was in Paris in the late 90's, I noticed armed militia patrolling the streets and subways and I was glad that we didn't have that in the US. At least not then. That doesn't make me feel safe, it makes me feel scared.

I could go to the Carribbean Islands, which would be my Immigration of Choice, but their economy is all tourism, there are not many opportunities in any industry, and you would quickly get Island Fever. Living on a small spot of land in the ocean would get tiresome, I would think. Although I wouldn't mind being tired of it.

I could head north to Canada, they don't have many enemies politically, are rather quiet in their global politics. They have the same standard of living as the US, mostly, and they have the same opportunities. Except that it's cold for 10 months out of the year. Again, something I could get used to, but I'd rather be sweating and bored in the Islands than freezing my ass off in Toronto.

Almost all business is conducted in English, so that really isn't an issue, but when you move to another country, I would want to learn the language so I could associate with the locals. I only have a smattering of Spanish, but I sort of feel like I'm already living in Mexico here in Georgia. The Cubans in Miami were another interesting group, but when Castro dies, they've already got Havana and Cuba up and running by their standards, and they probably won't hire Gringo's. There's Spain, and they are pretty non consequential in global politics, but aren't they a socialist country? I know they had a dictator for many years, and I believe they are have a king, but what form of government?

I could make a fortune going to the Middle East and working as a consultant, but then, could I? Women aren't really an asset over there, so I think it would be hard to get into one of these truly Gool Ole Boys companies, for my own safety. I don't think many companies would hire a woman to go over there. Besides, I could get blown up by a IED.

As much complaining as there is over here, this country works. The complaining itself is an example of a democracy at work. We can come and go as we please, do what we want with our lives and live a good life. All this may change shortly, and it looks like we are going down this path called 'National Security', but for now, I kinda like it here.

More to come...
As things happen, I'll be posting. Thanks for taking the time to read. You're opinions are welcome but if you have to start calling me names, don't bother, I won't read them. As my Dad says 'Opinions are like a**holes, everyone has one.'

I was a recruiter in South Africa for teachers to the Middle East. Most of them were women, and they had no complaints once they got there. They were treated very well and respected by their colleagues and management. Most people have these stereotypes of the Middle East, and it's a shame that the media perpetuates that image. For example, South Africans think Americans are fat, lazy, and "Jerry Springer" types, but only a small segment of the American population is like that.
I do like the States, and I've just returned. However, I plan to return to South Africa in a few years.
I respect your decision to stay in the States, and I wish you all the best.
