Short, Hot Weekend

Movies, TV Shows and hashing. I think I need a life.

Boil Water and making Coffee
This weekend, all of Dekalb county had to boil the tap water as there was a drop in water pressure due to a water main break. I only know this as I was watching the news on Friday and somewhere in the middle of the broadcast, they announced this edict. I guess we folks in Dekalb county really aren't news, I never saw any news broadcast lead with this story. At least the local Publix had some bottled water for me to make my coffee on Saturday and Sunday. Everything is back to 'normal' and we don't have to boil the water any more. Thanks for the concern.

Some of my Best Friends are SOB's!
Yesterday was the 350th hash for the SOB. It was fun, very hot, too much sun, but it had a pool ending, with food and frolic. SOB used to offer a good selection of alcohol (vodka, schnapps, malt beverages and beer) but now the selection has gotten pretty poor. I'm not critisizing the BeerMeister, he's got plenty to think about with 8 cats and a girlfriend 1/2 his age, but Natural Lite is not my choice of beverage. I didn't bring a bathing suit, I have this Poor Self Image and don't feel it would be a good thing to be seen in a swim suit. I really should get over myself, no one cares. The really sad part is, Back In The Day, I used to LOVE being in the water. I was a good swimmer, loved doing laps at the gym, I was a SCUBA diver and just loved being on the water or near the water. When I was a teenager, I used to do the sun-tanning at the pool thing, but now that we've learned all about sun damage and such, I don't /can't do that anymore. Besides, I'd rather be playing in the sun than just sitting. But now, not so much. Don't want to try to find a bathing suit, the one's I have have dry-rotted. I miss those days.

Movie Review
I learned, or re-learned, a lesson last night, 'Don't believe movie reviews'. I avoided watching the movie 'Quills' as the reviews I read said it was a horrible movie. I'm not into slasher movies, and since this was about the Marquis de Sade, it could easily have been a slasher movie. So I finally decided to rent the movie and 'takes my chances'. What a great movie! Very talented cast (Geoffery Rush in the lead role, Joaquin Phoenix, Kate Winslet and Michael Caine as a 'doctor'), the story was about the Marquis being holed up in an insane asylum. His wife decided socially that is was better to have an insane husband instead of a criminal husband, so he was locked up. He had special privilages, a nicely furnished room, a wine cellar, fine clothes, books, but he didn't have his freedom. So writing was his therapy. The washer wench (Kate Winslet) would smuggle his writing out of the asylum to get published, and would take the proceeds to the Marquis. His writings, much of which don't exist anymore, are pornographic, to say the least. He lived at the end of the 18th Century, so they had a much higher moral standard than we do today. The story was about how his pornography encited the inmates and wreaked havoc on society. I thought is was very well done, you actually liked the Marquis. Because Michael Caine was brought in to silence the Marquis, they took away all of his belongings, including his clothes, so Geoffery Rush played most of the movie naked, but tastefully so. (He's got a cute butt, if they didn't have a body double.) Anyway, I'd recommend this movie, good insite into the treatment of insane patients at this time.

The rest of the weekend was taken up by episodes of the HBO drama 'Carnivale'. I've got 2 more episodes in the first season, then the entire second season. I've got mixed feelings about this. I really liked the first 2 episodes, but the more I watch, the more annoyed I get at the lead character. He doesn't make any connections with the folks he works with, yet they all seem to care about this guy. People are offering him help, but he won't have anything to do with them. What a jerk. I've read the last episode answers a lot of questions, so we'll see. If not, I won't even watch the second season.

Job Hunt
I said last week I'd attend some seminars at the DOL, but guess what? Didn't. So tomorrow morning, I'm off (I SWEAR) to a seminar on training. I need to see if and what classes I can take to make me more 'employable'.

More to come...
As things happen, I'll be posting. Thanks for taking the time to read. You're opinions are welcome but if you have to start calling me names, don't bother, I won't read them. As my Dad says 'Opinions are like a**holes, everyone has one.'
