Double Standards

I'm feeling somewhat righteous today.

The 37-year-old woman who married her 15-year-old lover was arrested again yesterday. She's pregnant with his child, and helped him escape from juvenile custody a few weeks ago so he could be with her when the baby was born. Now this is wrong on so many levels. She is a predator and shouldn't be allowed to be around children. So why is this making national news? Why did the Mary Kay Latourneau case make news? Grown 'men' knock up teenage girls all the time and it never makes headlines. I'm hoping it's because women are supposed to be kinder and gentler. We aren't supposed to prey on children; we're supposed to nurture them. But I believe it's because 1) It's rare. (Women don't date younger men) and 2) It's fascinating. Women find it fascinating because they can't believe it and men find it fascinating cuz the little boy knocked up an older woman. Society has always placed a high value on a man's ability to procreate. King Henry VIII killed several women and separated from his church because he wanted a legitimate male heir. Society also places a high value on a man's ability to bed women. They are called 'Don Juan' and people smirk when speaking of their escapades. Men have 'urges'. Women are sluts.

Please don't think I'm a flaming Women's Lib supporter (now that's a term from the museum!) or that I hate men. I'm just saying. Women's virtue has always been highly prized in society. Women were supposed to be virgins at marriage, be virtuous throughout life and retire to a convent when they weren't needed any more. History supports these facts. There have been many women to break out of this mold, Elizabeth I of England, Katherine the Great of Russia (and others. I'm more versed in English/European history) , but women have always been the suppressed class.

But I digress. Male or female, you, as an adult have a responsibility to set an example to the children and to protect them, not abuse them. This situation should never make the news, it should never happen. But there are many sick f*cks out there who get their jollies out of molesting children. I'm not talking about that sick SOB that got arrested in AL for raping a 3-year-old (he should be drawn and quartered and left for the carrion, like in the old days) but adults who prey on older children. There could be an argument for consensus, but again, these older adults have NO RIGHT to take away someone's childhood. Pick on someone your own age. You must have some unrecognized control issues to want to get with a child.

One more thing
This is an open letter to the parents of the young man who was arrested in relation to the death of the student at UGA who was found to have a herion/cocaine cocktail in his system:

Dear Mom and Dad,
Your son has a problem. He's been arrested several times for drug violations, even kicked out of UGA. You enrolled him at another college in Colorado; do you really believe this will help? You've put him in a more volatile position, being so far away from adult supervision. What this child needs now, is to be taken out of college and put in a rehab center until he kicks his habit. Then keep him in there another 6 weeks to be sure he's kicked it. Then take him home and let him live there until he finishes college. I'm sorry if that is too much of a burden on you, but you signed up for that when you gave birth to this child. He needs your help and attention now. Give it to him.

More to come...

As things happen, I'll be posting. Thanks for taking the time to read. You're opinions are welcome but if you have to start calling me names, don't bother, I won't read them. As my Dad says 'Opinions are like a**holes, everyone has one.'
